COUNCIL ACTION TAKEN.• 1996.22- 1/23/96: Approved 7 -0, Resolution #96 -007 Related File Numbers: Ordinance or Resolution Number (this item only): kMnis.nes1 /17/96 SPONSORED BY: Consent PROPOSED BY: Nelson INTRODUCTION DATE: January 23. 1996 1 RESOLUTION NO. 96 -007 2 DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF JANUARY 21 TO JANUARY 27, 1996 AS 3 KIWANIS WEEK 4 WHEREAS, Kiwanis International, a community service organization with 327,000 5 members and 8,700 clubs, raised $63 million in cash and donated more than 6.5 million 6 volunteer hours in 77 nations and geographic areas; and 7 WHEREAS, there are 7,755 Kiwanians in 213 clubs in the state of Washington; and 8 WHEREAS, there are seven active Kiwanis clubs in Whatcom County, consisting of 9 the Bellingham Noon, Kulshan, Meridian, Ferndale, Blaine Peace Arch, Lynden Breakfast, 10 and Lynden Noon Clubs; and 11 WHEREAS, these Kiwanis Clubs sponsor four school youth clubs, consisting of the 12 Circle K Club at Western Washington University, two high school Key Clubs at Sehome and 13 Bellingham High, and one Builders Club at Shuksan Middle School, and additionally 14 sponsor one AKtion Club for the developmentally disabled in Bellingham; and 15 WHEREAS, the concept and principles of Kiwanis are embodied in their Six 16 Constitutional Objects, in which the first is to give primacy to the human and spiritual, 17 rather than the material values of life; and 18 WHEREAS, the primary thrust of all Kiwanis activities is for the youth in our 19 communities, placing major emphasis on the young children: Priority One efforts on behalf 20 of children ages prenatal through age five; and 21 WHEREAS, Kiwanis International working with Unicef and the World Health 22 Organization has made a commitment to the virtual elimination of Iodine Deficiency 23 Disorders (the number one preventable cause of mental retardation in the world) through 24 salt iodization, by the year 2000; and 25 WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Clubs of.
