1 RESOLUTION NO. 96 -003
2 RECOGNIZING THE NOTEWORTHY AND COMMENDABLE EFFORTS OF
3 COUNCIL MEMBERS LARRY HARRIS AND KEN HENDERSON AND BIDDING
4 THEM A FOND FAREWELL
5 WHEREAS, service in public office is a challenge and a burden that few aspire to,
6 and even fewer are chosen to bear; yet such service is fundamental to the protection of that
7 most precious possession, enjoyed by all, whether rich or poor, old or young, that possession
8 being our freedom; and
9 WHEREAS, the road to public service is a hard one; it requires the opening of one's
10 life, heart, and ambition to all their neighbors to measure and judge; it also requires contest
11 in the arena of public opinion, a place where the tides of time forever shift the sand, and
12 where stability can only be found when one stands upon honor, integrity and trust; and
13 WHEREAS, Larry Harris and Ken Henderson have stood for honor, integrity and
14 trust; they have conducted themselves in their service to the people of Whatcom County in
15 a manner that brings commendation to all; they have respected the diversity of opinion that
16 exists in the body politic; they have accepted compromise when appropriate to further the
17 public interest, and they have upheld principal in the face of adversity when compromise
18 would have been the easier course; and
19 WHEREAS, over the course of time change comes to all elected bodies; in the case
20 of Larry Harris and Ken Henderson, this changes comes through choice, not defeat, and it
21 is a choice we honor and respect;
22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that
23 Larry Harris and Ken Henderson are commended and honored by the people of Whatcom
24 County for their selfless and outstanding service for the good of the people, and with their
25 departure they carry the warmest regards and best wishes of their fellow Council Members
26 and the other elected officials and staff of Whatcom County.
