RESOLUTION NO. 98 -021
IN SUPPORT OF A PUBLIC HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTS OF
GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION IN NORTHERN WHATCOM COUNTY
WHEREAS, wells in the northern..part of Whatcom County have been found to be
contaminated with banned pesticides and nitrates; and
WHEREAS, the extent of the well contamination has not yet been determined; and,
WHEREAS, the effects of people bathing and cooking with the contaminated water has not
yet been assessed; and
WHEREAS, the State Department of Health is currently working to determine if there is a
link between contaminated wells and an apparent childhood leukemia cluster in the northern part of
Whatcom County; and
WHEREAS, local citizens and regional organizations have already asked the Agency for
Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to undertake such a health assessment; and
WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council is very concerned.about the health of residents
residing in Whatcom County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council hereby joins
the petition to ATSDR for a public health assessment of the effects of groundwater contamination

1 in Whatcom County, and hereby requests the County Administration to have the Health and Human
2 Services Department take an active role in working with other petitioners and the Agency for Toxic
3 Substances and Disease Registry to help define the scope of such an assessment.
