Res. #98 -012 Related File Numbers: Ordinance or Resolution Number (this item only): R98 -012 coloreetal.res2/2498 SPONSORED BY: Consent PROPOSED BY: Nelson INTRODUCTION DATE: 2/24/98 RESOLUTION NO. 98 -012 PROCLAIMING MARCH 1998 AS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN WHATCOM COUNTY WHEREAS, in the past ten years the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Whatcom County has been colorectal cancer; and WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer resulting in death in the United States; and WHEREAS, only 23 percent of Whatcom County cases are diagnosed before the tumor has spread beyond the local area (compared to a national figure of 37 percent); and WHEREAS, St. Joseph Hospital Community Cancer Center wants to improve these statistics by detecting colorectal cancer at an earlier stage, thereby saving lives in Whatcom County; and WHEREAS, there is a simple, safe, and effective colorectal cancer home testing kit which has shown to reduce mortality by 20 to 40 percent, and which is available at no cost through participating pharmacies; and WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council acknowledges this health risk and wishes to do its part to encourage its early detection. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council designates March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month; and Page 1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Whatcom County residents 50 years of age and older are encouraged to take part in the 1998 Colorectal Cancer Screening program by obtaining a free home testing kit from a participating pharmacy.
