3 IN SUPPORT OF THE NORTH SOUND CONNECTING COMMUNITIES PROJECT
4 WHEREAS, as we enter the 21 st century, population growth and increased economic activity
5 in the North Puget Sound region will require greater investment in a balanced, seamless
6 transportation system; and,
7 WHEREAS, our location between the major metropolitan areas in the Lower Mainland of
8 British Columbia and central Puget Sound and our sharing of common waters with Vancouver and
9 the Gulf Islands offers opportunities for regional and bi- national cooperation; and,
10 WHEREAS, a seamless system will improve the environment and air quality, reduce freight
11 movement delays, and enhance domestic and international tourism through the Two - nation vacation
12 initiative; and,
13 WHEREAS, the North Sound Connecting Communities.Project is a stakeholder process lead
14 by local officials and the private sector which will coordinate with state transportation planning and
15 revenue initiative, the border business plan through the International Trade Corridor and Mobility
5 Project, and the Connecting the Gateways and Trade Corridors Project's 20 year infrastructure and
0 finance plan for the Vancouver/Victoria, British Columbia to Eugene, Oregon Cascadia Corridor.
18 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council supports and
19 agrees to participate in the North Sound Connecting Communities Project to enhance transportation
20 between our communities for the movement of people and goods.
