found necessary to extend the existing school zone speed limit as

AN ORDINANCE REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF
SPEED LIMITS WITHIN A SCHOOL ZONE
WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council is authorized under RCW 46.61.415 to
establish speed limits on certain County roads; and
WHEREAS, a review was conducted by the County Engineer's office and was found to
be necessary to extend the existing school zone speed limit as established by Ordinance 76 -22,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED that a school zone and speed limit be set
and posted as "20 miles per hour, when children are present" at the following location:
Cable Street, from Lakeview Street to 200 feet east of Austin Street, Sections 26, 27,
34 and 35, Township 38 North, Range 3 East, W.M.
BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that the County Engineer is hereby directed to post the
appropriate signs and that the Whatcom County Sheriff and the Washington State Patrol be
notified by a copy of this ordinance.
Provisions of this ordinance are hereby added to Whatcom County Code, Section
10.04.095.

SUBJECT: Ordinance Extending the School Zone Speed Limit along Cable Street
Ordinance 76 -22 established a 20 mph school zone speed limit along Cable Street in the Geneva
area Due to recent development activities in the area, the County Engineer's office performed a
review of pedestrian crossing locations. With input from the Geneva Elementary School, we
recommend extending the limits of the school zone speed limit to better fit current conditions.
We therefore recommend adoption of an ordinance extending the existing school zone speed limits
in this area.
