RESOLUTION NO: 2002 -028
OPPOSING THE PLACEMENT OF A JEFFERSON DAVIS
MEMORIAL IN WHATCOM COUNTY
WHEREAS, Whatcom County is proud of its long history of
commitment to equal rights for all of its citizens; and
WHEREAS, Whatcom County citizenry is ethnically, racially, and
religiously diverse; and
WHEREAS, tolerance and respect for diversity are hallmarks of a
healthy community; and
WHEREAS, to many of our citizens, the Jefferson Davis
Monument is offensive and represents the horror of slavery; and
WHEREAS, the presence of the Jefferson Davis Monument in a
park dedicated to peace has created divisiveness within our
community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County
Council that our county shall not honor Jefferson Davis in Peace Arch
Park or any other public place in Whatcom County.
