Related File Numbers: Ordinance or Resolgji n&W.r, (this item): iiFF SPONSORED BY: County Executive PROPOSED BY: County Executive INTRODUCTION DATE: 03/23/04 RESOLUTION NO. 2004--W,2-- SUPPORTING FAIR HOUSING IN WHATCOM COUNTY WHEREAS, the Federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, leasing, or financing of housing or land to be used for construction of housing, or in the provision of brokerage services, because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or familial status; and WHEREAS, it is the intent of Whatcom County to ensure equal opportunity in housing for all persons regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or familial status. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Whatcom County Council that within available resources the County will, through referral, assist all persons who feel they have been discriminated against because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or familial status to seek equity under federal and state laws by filing a complaint with the Washington Human Rights Commission or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Seattle Regional Office Compliance Division. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Whatcom County shall publicize this resolution and through this publicity shall cause owners of real estate, developers, and builders to become aware of their respective responsibilities and rights under the Federal Fair Housing Law and any applicable state or local laws and ordinances. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in the event any person requires assistaue related to fair housing, such individual shall be referred to the Bellingham / Whatcom County Housing Authority, which is the agency located within Whatcom County that provides housing assistance to local residents. Page 1 BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Noising Authority's program includes, but is not limited to, the distribution of posters, flyers and any other means which will bring the attention of those affected, the knowledge of their respective responsibilities and rights concerning equal opportunity h housing.
