County Contract #: COUNCIL ACTION: 5/24/2005: Approved 6 -0, Caskey- Schreiber absent, Res. #2005 -024 File Numbers: 1 Ordinance or Resolution t Please ,Vote: Once adopted and signed, ordinances and resolutions are avallable for viewing and printing on the County's website 11 4 rrC. www.co,rvhatcotn.wa.us/coune j PROPOSED BY: Consent SPONSORED BY: Executive Brenner & Fleetwood INTRODUCED: May 24 2005 RESOLUTION NO. 2005 -024 RESTORATION OF THE CENTENNIAL POLE WHEREAS, on December 15, 1952 Whatcom County received the Centennial Pole, a totem pole carved by the Lummi Indians, telling the story of the arrival of the city's first white men, Captain Henry Roeder and Russell Peabody; and WHEREAS, Whatcom County values the significance of the Centennial Pale and the relationship with the Lummi Nation that it represents; and WHEREAS, over the last fifty -two years the Centennial Pole has embellished the Whatcom County Courthouse campus; and WHEREAS, the elements have necessitated its restoration; and WHEREAS, the Centennial Pole was carved by Joseph Hillaire, assisted by Herb John; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hillaire's daughter requests that the Centennial Pole be relocated to a site where this symbol of friendship can be viewed and enjoyed by more people in the community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the County Executive and the County Council commits $25,000 for the purpose of restoring and relocating the Centennial Pole. Further, the County Council authorizes the Executive to prepare such agreements that will carry out the restoration and relocation for public display.
