PROPOSED BY: Brenner SPONSORED BY: Consent INTRODUCED: October 10, 2006 RESOLUTION NO. 200.6 -061 DESIGNATING OCTOBER 22 - 28, 2006, AS ADULT LITERACY WEEK WHEREAS, the levels of skill and knowledge necessary for adults to succeed are higher than ever before; and WHEREAS, our success in the new global economy depends on increasing the productivity of our industries and enterprises, sustaining economic growth, and creating new jobs; and WHEREAS, many Washington State employers report they cannot find the qualified workers they need to do today's jobs or to expand to meet tomorrow's opportunities; and WHEREAS, our state's economic growth and prosperity depend on our ability to make education and job training accessible to adults of all ages and backgrounds; and WHEREAS, one in six adults in Washington lacks the education and training necessary to raise themselves and their families to self - sufficiency, and to close the skills gaps experienced by local employers; and WHEREAS, an increasingly diverse workforce is driving the need for additional adult basic education and English language education; and WHEREAS, our state must create a world -class education system to ensure that prosperity touches all of us, not just a few; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council designates the week of October 22 - 28, 2006, as Adult Literacy Week. 1. 00lt�'l Y qep� OVED this 10th day of October , 2006. ,\ _\ ....,... /.
