RESOLUTION NO. 200.6 -061
DESIGNATING OCTOBER 22 - 28, 2006, AS
ADULT LITERACY WEEK
WHEREAS, the levels of skill and knowledge necessary for adults to succeed
are higher than ever before; and
WHEREAS, our success in the new global economy depends on increasing
the productivity of our industries and enterprises, sustaining economic growth, and
creating new jobs; and
WHEREAS, many Washington State employers report they cannot find the
qualified workers they need to do today's jobs or to expand to meet tomorrow's
opportunities; and
WHEREAS, our state's economic growth and prosperity depend on our ability
to make education and job training accessible to adults of all ages and
backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, one in six adults in Washington lacks the education and training
necessary to raise themselves and their families to self - sufficiency, and to close the
skills gaps experienced by local employers; and
WHEREAS, an increasingly diverse workforce is driving the need for
additional adult basic education and English language education; and
WHEREAS, our state must create a world -class education system to ensure
that prosperity touches all of us, not just a few;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council
