YWCA Resolution PROPOSED BY: Brenner, Kremen SPONSORED BY: Consent INTRODUCED: May 8, 2007 RESOLUTION NO. 2007 -025 HONORING THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF THE YWCA AND URGING SUPPORT FOR ITS MISSION WHEREAS, the Young Women's Christian Association, founded in Bellingham in 1907, is celebrating 100 years of service to the women and families of our community; and WHEREAS, few organizations or institutions in this corner of Washington have such a proud and lengthy record of dedication to the people of this region; and WHEREAS, the YWCA has adapted its programs and priorities to the challenges and changes of the times but has never wavered from its mission; and WHEREAS, the YWCA has created or nurtured initiatives in health, women's employment, and care and protection of women and their families; and WHEREAS, among its many initiatives have been breast cancer awareness and prevention, non - traditional employment opportunities, and support for survivors of domestic violence, all issues addressed long before there was great public awareness about them; and WHEREAS, the YWCA's Larrabee Residence has been a safe and comfortable temporary home for thousands of women from its opening in 1915 to the present; and WHEREAS, Larrabee Residence provides free and low -cost transitional housing and services for more than 100 single women in crisis each year, helping them to move on to a brighter future; and WHEREAS, the YWCA Back to Work Boutique provides low - income women in our community appropriate clothing for job interviews and the first weeks in a new job or ongoing education; and WHEREAS, the YWCA is a non - sectarian, non - partisan association dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women; and WHEREAS, on June 8, 2007, the YWCA begins a year -long celebration of a proud past and looks toward the challenges and achievements of its next 100 years. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council and the Whatcom County Executive salute the YWCA of Bellingham upon the occasion of its Centennial Celebration. BE FURTHER RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council and the Whatcom County Executive urge citizens to join in honoring the YWCA's history of service and supporting, in whatever measure possible, YWCA programs for women and families and, through them, the betterment of our community.
