Supporting WWU's State funding request PROPOSED BY: Consent SPONSORED BY: Consent INTRODUCED: January 30, 2007 RESOLUTION NO. 2007 -007 SUPPORTING WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY'S REQUEST FOR STATE FUNDING TO BE USED FOR PLANNING AND FEASIBILITY STUDIES LEADING TO THE BELLINGHAM WATERFRONT RE- DEVELOPMENT PROCESS WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council voted on October 10, 2005, to support the efforts of the City of Bellingham to obtain funding for and participate in the development of Bellingham's waterfront to create an environmentally friendly, energy efficient and financially viable development that will bring prosperity to the entire County; and WHEREAS, Western Washington University (WWU) has been working with the Port of Bellingham and other local public and private partners to include a presence for the university in the waterfront development project, and WHEREAS, the primary principle for WWU's decision making for potential program development at the waterfront site is, consistent with WWU's mission and integrity, to contribute to the larger Bellingham community and to the State by integrating Western with the community in mutually beneficial partnerships and promoting sustainable waterfront development (economic, social, environmental, educational); and WHEREAS, the programs the university is examining for potential location at the waterfront include Huxley College of the Environment, the Small Business Development Center, a Consortium for Technology Based Economic Development, and others that will expand the university's service to the community and will strive to stimulate the development potential for the area for other businesses and services; and WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council recognizes the significant positive impact Western Washington University has on the economy, as well as on the quality of the environmental, cultural and educational life of the county and its citizens; and WHEREAS, the Whatcom County Council strongly encourages area legislators to support public projects that will have a significant impact on the quality of life of Whatcom County's citizens; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council supports Western Washington University's request to the State Legislature to provide funds for planning and feasibility studies leading to the Bellingham Waterfront re- development process. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County's support for this project funding is in addition to the County's priority funding requests for financial assistance for the creation of the East County Community Center and funding requests that are needed for stormwater improvements or fixes within the Lake Whatcom Watershed.
