Resolution proclaiming Peace Officer Memorial Day COMMITTEE ACTION: COUNCIL ACTION: 5 / 11 / 2010 : Council Approved 7 -0 Res . 2010- 020 • Related County Contract #: Related File Numbers: Ordinance or Resolution Number: Res . 2010- 020 Please Note: Once adopted and signed, ordinances and resolutions are available for viewing and printing on the County 's website at: www. co. whatcom. wa. us/council. 1 SPONSORED BY : Consent 2 PROPOSED BY: Consent 3 INTRODUCTION DATE : May 11 , 2010 4 5 RESOLUTION NO. ? 010-020 6 7 PROCLAIMING MAY 15, 2010, AS PEACE OFFICERS 8 MEMORIAL DAY 9 10 WHEREAS, the Congress and President of the United States have designated May 15 11 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which it falls as Police Week ; and 12 13 WHEREAS, the members of the law enforcement agencies of Whatcom County play 14 an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Whatcom 15 County ; and 16 17 WHEREAS, it is important that all citizens know and understand the problems , 18 duties, and responsibilities of their law enforcement departments, and that members of our 19 law enforcement departments recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life 20 and property, by protecting them against violence or disorder, and by protecting the 21 innocent against deception and the weak against oppression or intimidation . 22 23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council , together 24 with the Whatcom County Executive and the Whatcom County Sheriff, hereby calls upon all 25 patriotic, civil , and educational organizations to observe the week of May 9 through 15 , 26 2010 , as Police Week with appropriate ceremonies in which all of our people may join in 27 commemorating law enforcement officers , past and present, who by their faithful and loyal 28 devotion to their responsibilities have rendered a dedicated service to their communities 29 and , in doing so, have established for themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for 30 preserving the rights and security of all citizens . 31 32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Whatcom County Council , together with the 33 Whatcom County Executive and the Whatcom County Sheriff, calls upon all citizens of 34 Whatcom County to observe Saturday, May 15 , 2010 , as Peace Officers Memorial Day in 35 honor of those peace officers who , through their courageous deeds, have lost their lives or 36 have bec9f �Ij� abled in the performance of duty . 37 00 '� ( C ® 39 \�`���fl?c,tE ig't 11th day of May , 2010 . 40 V`' _ 41 ` Cl •O� COUNTY • WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL 42 _ a .
