RESOLUTION NO. 2011 -021
SUPPORT FOR THE AMERICAN ALPS LEGACY PROPOSAL
WHEREAS, our National Parks are a treasured resource to all Americans for their
conservation , recreation , research , historic, and economic values ; and
WHEREAS, a large part of the North Cascades National Park is located in Whatcom
County ; and
WHEREAS, more than 40 years after the North Cascades National Park was created ,
pristine rivers and streams, magnificent mountains, lowland old growth forests , core wildlife
habitats, and popular recreation sites surrounding the park still remain unprotected ; and
WHEREAS, all of these proposed areas are already federally controlled lands and no
privately owned or state designated lands are included , and
WHEREAS, both regional and local gateway community economies can significantly
benefit from high -value recreation and tourism opportunities provided by the North Cascades ;
and
WHEREAS, such economies can be bolstered even further by proximity to accessible
recreation and tourism opportunities recognized as National Parks , and
WHEREAS, Washington State residents depend on a healthy environment to sustain
commerce , green jobs , ecosystem services, and a cherished quality of life ; and
WHEREAS, human population growth in the Puget Sound requires additional vigilance to
protect the water supplies, aquatic ecosystems, wildlife habitats, old growth forests, and
outstanding recreation opportunities provided by the North Cascades ; and
WHEREAS, these treasured resources can be permanently and completely preserved
though Congressional designation of new national park lands ; and
WHEREAS, the American Alps Legacy Proposal will add more than 234, 000 acres to the
North Cascades National Park, protect fish and wildlife habitats, enhance family-friendly
recreation opportunities , and increase economic benefits in communities adjacent to the Park,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Whatcom County Council supports the
American Alpps Legacy Proposal to complete the conservation vision for the North Cascades
Natior� �Pa rnfidt* Congressional designation of additional park lands .
